Cutting into the Silence

A literary reflection on systems, identity, and humanity

Cutting into the Silence draws on the life and work of an oncological surgeon to explore how professional, cultural, and institutional systems shape our development, values, and identity.

The book traces a journey that begins in a small mountain village in Turkey and unfolds across borders, languages, and hierarchies into a medical career in Belgium. Experiences of migration, ambition, family, education, and responsibility become the backdrop against which broader questions emerge: about power, efficiency, and the structures that quietly shape our professional and social lives.

Cutting into the Silence slows down where the conventional success story tends to accelerate. It looks beneath the surface of achievement and asks what is gained — and what is lost — when systems come to value measurability, control, and output more highly than meaning, presence, and care.

23 SEPTEMBER 2025 - 23 SEPTEMBER 2026

One year of Cutting into the Silence

On 23 September 2025, Cutting into the Silence was published as part of a three-language release in Dutch, English and Turkish, across multiple formats.

Over the year that followed, the book found new readers and opened conversations through interviews, talks and encounters that could not have been foreseen at publication.

Looking back, I also recognise in that first year something of what the Zigana Compass seeks to capture: when the route is uncertain, that does not necessarily mean that direction is lost.

One year later, we are still very much inside the book.

What this book explores

A lived trajectory

From a mountain village in Anatolia to an academic hospital in Belgium — not as a success story, but as context. Migration, ambition, family, education, and responsibility form the backdrop against which larger questions come into view: who decides what progress means? What is the price of adaptation? And when does loyalty become a boundary?

Systems and their silent logic

Hospitals, universities, and organisations are built to function. But when efficiency, measurability, and control begin to dominate, the human being can disappear from view. The book explores how systems shape behaviour, how power often organises itself invisibly, and why a structure that functions well does not necessarily function humanely.

An inner movement

Identity does not take shape in isolation. It develops through the interplay of experience, expectations, background, environment, and the positions we occupy. Cutting into the Silence traces a shift from external validation towards inner orientation — from performing in order to be seen towards acting from values that do not depend on recognition or status.

Themes that cut - and connect

Four recurring tensions run through the book. Not as separate chapters, but as undercurrents connecting its different narrative strands.

Exclusion ↔ Belonging

What does it mean to belong — and who gets to decide? Migration, language, professional culture, and hierarchy reveal how belonging is created, but also where boundaries are drawn.

Resilience ↔ Vulnerability

Resilience does not appear as the opposite of vulnerability, but often takes shape within it. The book explores how strength and vulnerability can coexist — and at times even depend on one another.

Humanity ↔ Systems

Systems are necessary. At the same time, the book asks what happens when their internal logic becomes more important than the people they are meant to serve.

External validation ↔ Inner orientation

What changes when recognition, status, and achievement are no longer the primary measures of worth? The book traces a movement from external validation towards an orientation increasingly grounded in one’s own values.

Critical reception

“A compassionate and thoughtful guide to reclaiming one’s humanity in a systems-driven world.”
— Kirkus Reviews

“Contemplative memoir paralleling medical practice with the human experience.”
— BookLife Reviews (Publishers Weekly)

“A clear and deeply human story that examines how systems quietly undermine the values they claim to support.”
— Readers’ Favorite

Cutting into the Silence offers no method and no quick answers. It creates space for reflection — on work, care, ambition, and the quiet choices that shape a life within systems that rarely slow down.

From Book to Compass

The questions running through Cutting into the Silence — about values, direction, identity, and acting within systems — developed further in the Zigana Compass. Not to prescribe which path to follow, but to help find direction when the route is not self-evident.
